Motherhood and Lineage Documentary

DOCUMENTING MOTHERHOOD, IDENTITY AND LINEAGE. IN HOME SESSIONS + SACRED SPACES.

This isn’t about creating a polished, perfect version of your family. It’s about documenting a period of your life that is actively changing you, physically, emotionally, and relationally whilst you’re still inside it.

A lot of motherhood and family imagery focuses on connection (rightfully so), but only the surface of it. What I’m interested in is the full experience from the body that’s grown life and the identity that’s being reworked to the dynamics inside a home and the fragility of life as we know it.

That might look like pregnancy, where your body is changing faster than you can process. Your clothes stop fitting the way they used to, people start relating to you differently, and you’re navigating a constant mix of anticipation, discomfort, and being looked at in a way you haven’t before.

It might be early postpartum, where you’re physically recovering, sleep deprived, and completely reoriented around someone else’s needs. You might be feeding around the clock, half-dressed most of the day, unsure of where your body begins and ends, and adjusting to a version of yourself that no one really prepared you for.

It might be the months or years after that, where life looks more “settled” from the outside, but you’re carrying the mental load of a household, balancing work and care, and trying to find space for yourself inside a role that can easily take up everything.

Or it might be the rare moments where multiple generations are in the same space…your children with your mother or grandmother and you realise you’re looking at something that won’t exist forever.

Maternity Embodiment Photoshoot

An intimate and empowering photographic session documenting the transition into motherhood.

This can be held in your home or outdoors, depending on what feels most natural to you. The focus is on your body and the shift you’re in, not necessarily being styled to perfection or performing for the camera. Sophie weaves embodiment practices into the photoshoot, so you feel grounded and supported throughout the process.

The Motherhood Archive: Home Sessions

This is the core of the documentary work. The Motherhood Archive is a longer, in-home documentary session that captures your life as it actually is: your home, your rhythms, your relationships, and the stage of life you’re in.

There’s no structure to follow, this session is designed to move with your day and document what naturally unfolds. This is about having the authentic moments captured so when you look back over time, you’ll be able to feel those emotions embedded in the images and reflect on the stories.

Photography has the power to both tell stories and preserve stories. As I documented my nanna’s life during my university years, I came to deeply understand how powerful it is to preserve these moments, to honour the lineage and the women who have shaped us. These portraiture sessions are a window into the hearts of the women who came before us and the stories they’ve passed on, as well as the marking of our own journeys as women. Too often we wait until it’s too late to capture photos, especially generationally. Don’t let that happen to you.

ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

I’m Sophie Spencer

A documentary photographer with a background in photojournalism and social documentary. My work has always been rooted in observing real life as it unfolds. Before this, I worked across travel and food photography, but it wasn’t until 2020, when I began facilitating women’s embodiment experiences, that things really clicked.

Since then, my work has shifted into something much more personal and honestly, life changing, not just for me, but for the women that step in front of my camera.

I work with women who often feel uncomfortable being photographed, especially during seasons where their bodies and identities are changing. Pregnancy, postpartum, long-term motherhood.

What I’ve found is that when someone feels safe, they don’t need to perform, and that’s where the images start to really make impact. My work is an extension of that.

It draws on my background in documentary, but also on years of holding space for women, understanding how to be present without directing, and how to document something honestly without making it feel exposed or overwhelming.
